New Jersey Motorsports Park to build the Chris Economaki Media Center

September 21, 2007
By Arianne Hegeman

The ground breaking ceremony for The New Jersey Motorsports Park took place September, 19th just outside of the “Lightning Bulb” turn of one of the two tracks currently being built in Millville, NJ.  Several legislators, business people, corporate partners, community leaders, and motorsports enthusiasts were on hand to help celebrate the hard work and endless determination that the NJMP project required.  The 150 million dollar motorsports facility is the brainchild of many individuals who each took a turn behind the podium on Wednesday night.

Don Fauerbach, was the emcee for the evening earning that right throughout the last several years. He was the army-of-one Millville resident who led the pack of supporters against the nay Sayers and legislation that attempted to snuff out the dream that began over 15 years ago.

Fauerback introduced two of the industry’s biggest names who sat directly behind him.  Those men were; Harvey Seigel, one of NJMP’s owners who also built Virginia International Raceway, and one of the most famous men of motorsports; Chris Economaki.  Economaki is the media mastermind behind decades of racing coverage and created the famed periodical; Speed Sport News.  He was genuinely surprised when presented with the notion that the future NJMP media center would be named after his likeness.  “Thank you, I am touched,” said Economaki with obvious emotion.

Project principals Joe Savaro and Lee Brahin spoke of the endless hours spent on the phone and the overwhelming piles of paperwork that sparked the present construction on the facility.  Despite the long haul, both men agreed that the motorsports park will eventually play a significant role in improving the state of affairs for an area that has been economically challenged for years. Fauerbach also added his hopes for the future; “We really feel this project is going to help change the overall landscape of Millville, Cumberland County and the region.”
