BACKSEAT DRIVERS VOLUME 29
Do you think the changes to the Chase format were worth it?
Do you think the changes to the Chase format were worth it? Arianne: It's hard to be in favor of any changes to a system that basically defeats the purpose of 26 previous events. The only positive change to the Chase would be to do away with it completely. But, that is my opinion, and I'm sure the Chase has plenty of fans out there. NASCAR's efforts to award more points to a winner makes sense but why couldn't that have been the only change? Adding two more drivers into the mix did nothing to increase interest in the final 10 races. The over-hyped playoff format has made the Nextel Cup series tough to watch and this weekend will be no different. I'll be watching football this Sunday with an occasional flip back to see what's going on over at ABC. Thank God we still have the Craftsman Truck Series. Kris: I do think they changes were worth it. 2007 has just proven to be an unusual year because Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson have been so dominant. The dominance hasn't been just during the Chase either- Jeff especially has been on his Drive for 5 since the beginning of the season. More often than not, I think the Chase will be tighter than it is this year. Also, I think NASCAR should keep the Chase as it was in the beginning- with only 10 drivers. Some would say adding positions 11 and 12 were to make sure Dale Jr. could get into the Chase and obviously that still didn't help. Put in back the way it was- Top 10. That way they all will get on the stage in Kimmie: I hate it, but for a different reasons than most. During the season, it is hard enough for all the drivers on the track to get attention even when they do something incredible. During the Chase it seems no one but those twelve exist. Worse though is the idea that the Chasers deserve some more leeway on the track because they are racing for the trophy. If that is the case then only allow those cars to compete that way no one else gets blamed for wrecking their chances.
Sheree: No, not at all. Yet, it¢s more exciting because there are more people in the chase, but the concept of the top runners is always going to be the same for the rest of that particular season. I personally think they need to tweak out the Chase format a lot more. It's no where near as exciting as who is going to make it into the SuperBowl, World Series, or even the Stanley Cup. It's only missing that little pizzazz and I haven't quite placed my finger on what exactly it is they can do just yet. My question is, "What about race fans? What do you think?" Lissa: Honestly, I've never liked the Chase format. I think it is one of the worst decisions ever. To me, everything was fine the way it was. What's the old saying? "If it isn't broke, don't fix it" or something like that. If I had to really choose, I would say that I like that more people get a chance at the Cup (and I'm not saying that just because Mr. Truex is sorta in the Chase! haha). Giving more guys the opportunity for the Cup is always nice. Seeing the same guys year after year gets a little old. Adding a few more to the mix is good.
