BACKSEAT DRIVERS VOLUME 37
Are you surprised by Hendrick's slow start to the 2008 season?
Kris: Very surprised! I thought Jimmie and Jeff would pick up where they left off last year and that Jr. would follow a bit behind them. Instead, here he is leading the Hendrick pack. I'm sure we'll soon here the conspiracy theorists saying that he's getting better equipment, etc... Well, I think Casey Mears is the one getting the shaft and he always has.
Kimmie: Yes and no. I am surprised that Johnson and Gordon are not setting the world on fire and that Earnhardt is doing the best on the team. Sadly, I did not hold out much hope for Mears.
Heather: Yes, I am surprised by the slow start of Hendrick Motorsports. I really expected them to dominate these first couple of weeks before the other teams eventually caught up.
Paolo: No, I'm not surprised. It's part of the game and use to happen in all racing series. Not too long ago,Tony Stewart captured the 2005 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship, but few NASCAR junkies -- including me -- disagree that the season belonged to Roush Racing (15 victories, all five drivers on the "Chase for the NEXTEL Cup", etc). In another words, 2006 could be a blue sky for the Roush "army"... but we all know how that history was written. I would also like to point to an example regarding the Formula One World Championship of the 2004 season, the Marboro Ferrari Team captured 15 victories of the 17 held that year. Everybody expected to see the Italian cars repeat that performance next season but that do not happen (Mild Seven Renault Team claim the F1 crown). So, as I said before, it's all a part of the game. Nothing lasts forever and that's the magic of motorsports!
