BACKSEAT DRIVERS VOLUME 34
Will the nation's economy have an impact on NASCAR?

BACKSEAT DRIVERS VOLUME 34

Arianne:   Yes and No.  I think race fans will somehow find a way to get race tickets.  We're pretty passionate about our sport so I see families skipping dinner for a few nights in order to save up for tickets.

But I do believe the economy will effect the sport from a more internal aspect.  For instance, small race teams are struggling to afford the high costs of competition in NASCARNASCAR has made small steps to alleviate some of the pressure but there is still a lot to be done.  Corporations are struggling to make profit and this directly results in less money available for sponsorship.  With the added sponsorship restrictions of late, it compounds an already distressed situation.

Kris:  Yes. I think it already has. I always hear about these major companies laying off tons of employees and then I wonder how they can still afford to sponsor a race car? Too, I think it is getting pretty expensive to attend a race. Even if it's within driving distance, there's still the price of gas to consider and the outrageous way motels jack up their prices on race weekends. I stayed at home from Kansas City just for some of those specific reasons. Will I be able to attend this year? Time will tell.

Sheree: I sure do! I only say that because the economy is so bad right now.  I've actually talked about this with a few NASCAR fans recently, and with an exception of a couple race fans, everyone I know said they will be buying their merchandise off track. Only because it’s usually a lot cheaper (their exact words). I think there were only one or two people who said, "They only shop inside the track, at their favorite drivers trailer." So with that, I believe this season, sales will drop, unless there is a major change in the economy in the next few weeks!

Myself, I usually shop inside the track, and I usually get myself a shirt and one for my son, JJ, but with the recent hardships in the economy, I most likely will travel outside the track to see what each vendor has. Not to mention, all the neat things you can see while you’re off track. I always see some really impressive things outside the track. Some of the stuff people sell, range from gas cans, car/truck mats, shirts/outfits, flags, bobble heads of your favorite driver, and more. "You get to see a lot of different things out there, they have such a variety, that’s for sure," one of my customers said to me the other day while I was doing their nails at my salon. So everyone is at least thinking about cutting back or shopping at other places, so they can get a really good deal. They also mentioned, that they thought race tickets were getting way to expensive as well. Her exact words were “Just to buy two tickets to the race, costs me a fortune! Race tickets are way too outragiously priced!"

However, no one thought it would affect ticket sales.  That was something we all agreed on, if you wanna see a race you wanna see a race and that’s the bottom line.  It's something you cannot experience in the comforts of your own home.  Although there are some people who thought they wouldn’t attend as many races as they usually did, they did say that they would only go to one or two races instead of their normal four or five races they always attended. That it was also very hard to choose which races they would go to, and which ones they would not be going too. One person said they had planned on attending Dover and Bristol this year and that was it.  Two races, when they usually went to about four or five races each year.  But honestly, I don’t think that if will ultimately effect any ticket sales this season, but I guess we just have to wait and see, because if the economy does stay as horrid as it has been, I don’t know, we just might see NASCAR’s earnings drop this year. Only time will tell!

Brianna:
I do not think our economy will impact racing.  I think fans will have save money elsewhere and still spend, spend, and spend at the track.  Hey, actually the economy may get better this year cause when you look in the stands you will be seeing a lot of "green" thanks to Junior.

Kimmie:
I do believe people will still go to races, but I think tickets sales will suffer.

The biggest impact will be on teams and sponsors all over the country.  Small and large teams and all types of tracks will be struggling to find ways to cut costs and raise money will still finding ways to bring in fans.  This recession could easily sound the death bell of many in the sport.
