BACKSEAT DRIVERS VOLUME 27
Michael Waltrip's Talladega Surprise

Backseat Drivers Volume 27

Were you surprised by Michael Waltrip's Pole at Talladega last week?

Sheree:  Very surprised, but very pleased for him and Toyota!  It was cool to think "Mikey likes it!" like the old saying says.

Arianne:    No, not at all.  As long as we have the top 35 rule, we will continue to see the "go or go homers" in the top ten during impound weekends.  They have to use qualifying set ups instead of race set ups just to make sure they get in the field.  The top 35 run their race sets up because during impound races you can not make adjustments to your car after qualifying.  So those "go or go homers" will concentrate on qualifying set ups and make race adjustments during the first pit stop of the event.  The top 35 guys will start the race a leg up on those "go or go homers".

Kimmie:  At first, I was surprised, after reflecting upon how the season has slowly been blossoming for MWR, it was right on time and the perfect moral boost for the company.

Kris:  I was very surprised, but kept praying toward the end of qualifying that he would be able to keep the position.  Mikey has always been my favorite driver and he's had such bad luck and poor showings this year. He deserved the little ray of sunshine he had at Talladega.  Even his race run was good until that tire blew with only 13 to go. It was visions of his old days at DEI.  Michael Waltrip Racing will be much improved in 2008, mark my words!

Maryann:  Yes, I was surprised that Michael Waltrip had taken the pole at Talladega, he has had such a rough race season. It was quite an unexpected surprise. Dave Blaney had the Pole, but by Waltrip taking and holding it, he got the boost he really needed to bolster a disappointing year. Some of the drivers must qualify on time and Michael is one of them. The few drivers that are forced to qualify on timefocus on there qualify setups as opposed to race day setups. Michael is one of these drivers and he will have his work cut out for him as this is an impound race. He does run well at superspeedways with three wins. I am anxious to see how he does today.
